Step #1: Mirror their language.
You’d be amazed at the effects of using similar language to that of the other person. Pick up on things like slang, phrasing, rate, and volume. For example, if they talk slowly in a deep voice, then you do the same. This helps in developing the interpersonal skills that are so important when talking with people.
See if you can adopt the same breathing pattern as the other person. Be observant of their chest and shoulders and get your breathing in sync with theirs. Mirroring their language makes them comfortable in talking with you. It’s simple and very useful in getting along with people and establishing trust.
Step #2: Observe their moods and match it.
Match their level of energy. If they’re somber and low-key, you don’t want to be loud and energetic. Conversely, if they’re high energy and full of life, you don’t want to be low-key and moody.

If their arms are folded, then fold your arms as well. If they’re head is resting on their hands, do the same! Once again, don’t look like you’re purposely trying to match them; this is something you want to do gradually and make it look natural.
Don’t make them feel as if you are mimicking them. It makes them think you are making fun of them, and just adds insult to injury. Learn to be subtle in mirroring their body language gestures to where it comes off as being your own.
