How can I overcome being so self conscious, Vin?

Whenever I go out I find that I’m worried about what other people think of me. I’ve always been this way.  I’ve never thought about it until recently, but now I’m realizing that maybe that isn’t the way I want to be, anymore.

It’s good that you’re starting to recognize how this hasn’t been benefiting you in your life.

Self consciousness is definitely an important aspect to work on.  It’s usually a sign that we don’t have a good relationship with ourselves.  Working on who we are as a person, our internal belief and mindset, and changing our self image can be a great way to start to remove a lot of that need to please other people.

I don’t want to sound like a baby or anything, but how can I make this easy on myself? What are some first small steps that I can take?

I would say to start treating yourself better.  I highly recommend checking out some great materials on working on self image and starting to change your self- image.  I recommend “Zero Resistance Living” which is an audio program by Maxwell Maltz, who originally wrote Psycho-Cybernetics.  It will give you a program over a twelve week period that will help you start to utilize the right tools for working on your self-image and having a better internal perception of yourself.

There is another book I can recommend with a 12 week program called The Presence Process by Michael Brown that will help you to raise your consciousness level through a gradual process of breathing and giving yourself daily affirmations. Even purchasing a small calendar with pull-off pages with positive statements for each day can help center you into feeling better about yourself.

While you’re doing this, start to focus on some small changes in your life.

  It might be wearing clothes that are a bit more fitting and flattering.  It could be making your bed in the morning.  Just generally show yourself more regard and consideration. If your room is very messy and disorganized, then the first step toward moving forward could simply be to clean up your room.  Get rid of whatever unnecessary things you don’t need –do it for the benefit to your own self.  A lot of people would say, “No one comes into my room, so what’s the point?”  The point is: you are in your room and it’s a reflection of how you respect yourself.

There is a business consultant who has helped many people succeed in their businesses. 

The first thing he gets people to do is remove all the junk that they’ve accumulated and left in their garages.  He tells them that the first step for them to be able to make changes and be able to work with him is to clear out all the noise.

You will be surprised how simply being more organized and removing things that aren’t necessary anymore has a huge impact on your psyche.
